Medical Colleges in India At present, there are 362 medical colleges including 7 AIIMS with 45629 MBBS and 22850 postgraduate seats in the country. The current doctor population ratio in the country is approximately 1:2000 which yields a density of 0.5 doctors per thousand population. To reach the desired target of 1 doctor per 1000 population by 2030, the country will require 15.4 lakh doctors. As per High Level Expert Group (HLEG) report presented to Planning Commission, we need additional 187 medical colleges in underserved districts during XIIth & XIIIth Plan.
