HRD Ministry to Open 50 Educational DTH Channels The HRD Ministry will soon launch 50 DTH educational channels. This was stated by the Secretary (HE) Sh Ashok Thakur in New Delhi today. He said these channels will be different from the existing programmes on air including Gyan Darshan as new one will be more interactive. He said these channels will air programmes which will be live and not pre recorded. Saying that the new initiatives will be one of the largest anywhere in the world of its kind, Sh. Thakur said later on the number of the channels will be increased to one thousand. He said that the Ministry has spent more than one billion dollars for ICT. Over 400 universities and twenty thousand colleges have been linked with bandwidth. He said there is a great potential to increase its usage. Cable TV News: Cable TV connections in India... How many cable TV network connections and DTH connections in India..? The Information and Broadcasting Ministry report said that ‘as per the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) KPMG Indian Media Entertainment Industry Report 2012, there are a total of 146 million TV households in India in 2011. Out of which, Cable TV Networks covers 74 million households i.e. about 51 %, Private Direct to Home (DTH) covers 37 million homes i.e. about 25%, Doordarshan Direct to Home covers 8 million homes i.e. about 6 %, remaining 27 million homes are covered by the terrestrial coverage of Doordarshan which is around 18%. The report further mentions that the overall Television Industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17% over the period 2011-16 and the DTH segment is also growing with the significant rate.
